On November 23rd – in the Dutch week of patient safety – NIVEL-researcher Marleen Smits will defend her thesis on the causes of such unintended events at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam.

Prognosis of functional deterioration in osteoarthritis

Functioning in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee deteriorates less rapidly than expected. During a period of three years functioning remains relatively stable. Individual patients show considerable differences. In particular comorbidity is an important prognostic factor for functional deterioration. This was stated by Gabriella van Dijk in her thesis ‘Course of limitations in activities in elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee’, which she defended October 26th at the VU University in Amsterdam.

Publication of comparative quality information leads to better performances of health plans

The introduction of managed competition in the Dutch healthcare system along with public reporting of quality information is associated with performance improvement in health plans, according to a study published in the open access journal BMC Health Services Research.

Belarus moving towards a stronger primary health care

Belarus has a strong centralised health care system, with hardly any space for local developments, as a study by NIVEL, initiated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), has shown. A more primary care-oriented system is in progress. The results have been published in a WHO-report.

People living close to green space have lower rates of anxiety/depression and poor physical health than those living in concrete jungles, finds research by NIVEL, EMGO+ and Alterra published ahead of print in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Physical restraints in home care in the Netherlands

Four out of every five nursing staff members in Dutch home care have applied physical restraints. Guidelines are necessary regarding what to do when a client is in danger of hurting him- or herself, researchers of NIVEL state in The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Majority of unintended incidents in the ER are

Sixty percent of the causes of unintended incidents in the emergency department that could have compromised patient safety are related to human failures, according to a study published in the open access journal BMC Emergency Medicine.

The need for clear quality leadership by hospital CEOs

The extent to which medical specialists, nurses and other health care professionals adopt national quality norms, depends on the balance between quality measures at different levels and the leadership of hospital CEOs. This conclusion follows from the PhD study defended by Michel Dückers on the 9th of September at Utrecht University.

Improve patient safety in hospitals at unit level

A Dutch questionnaire based on an US counterpart that aims to measure patient safety culture in hospitals does indeed measure the culture in a hospital unit. Each hospital can use it, as is demonstrated in a publication of researchers of NIVEL and the EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research (VUmc) in Quality and Safety in Health Care.

Assessing patient experiences with rheumatoid arthritis care

With the CQ-index rheumatoid arthritis (RA) health care experiences of patients with rheumatoid arthritis can be assessed so that rheumatologist and other caregivers can improve their care. The CQ-index fits a world wide trend, as NIVEL researchers show in their publication in the Rheumatology International.
