The GP more frequently consulted for STD

In the past year 110,000 Dutch persons consulted the GP for a STD or concern about HIV. That is a rise of about 30,000 compared to the previous year. Is safe sex impopular? Or is the barrier to consult the GP for this issue disappearing? More women than men consult the GP for STD risk or concern about HIV.

Healthier populations in countries with stronger primary care

European countries with stronger primary care have a healthier population. This is a major outcome of a NIVEL study in 31 European countries, on the basis of which Dionne Kringos obtained the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree on Monday November 12th at Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

More ‘common symptoms’ after cancer

Cancer survivors visit their general practitioner more often for common symptoms like back pain, abdominal pain, or infections than the general population. The number of contacts due to chronic diseases and psychosocial problems is only slightly higher, according to a publication of NIVEL researchers in the European Journal of Cancer.

General practitioners not very sensitive to financial incentives

The way general practitioners (GPs) are paid has only limited effects on the affordability, accessibility and quality of care. Medical ethics and guidelines in Dutch general practice seem to have counteracted large differences in the provision of health care, says Christel van Dijk in NIVEL-research on which she attained the doctoral degree at Tilburg University.

Money rather than quality impetus to competition

In 2011 8% of the Dutch population switched health care insurer. This is the highest rate ever since in 2006 the Health Insurance Act was introduced and 20% of the population changed health care insurer. Especially young people change. Premium is by far the most important reason to change. In the new health care system money rather than quality appears to be the impetus to competition. This is the result of a study regarding the motives for changing health care insurer, published in Eurohealth by NIVEL researchers.

Measurement of patient experiences leads to better care

Nursing homes, homes for the elderly and home care organizations that previously received a relatively poor assessment of patients, have improved their care. Their performance could have been even better if clients had been actively involved in implementing improvements. This is what Marloes Zuidgeest concludes in her PhD-thesis. The study was a joint effort of Tranzo, NIVEL and the Dutch Centre for Consumer Experience in Health Care.

Negative thoughts unhelpful for kidney

The beliefs kidney patients have about their illness, treatment and the support they experience, are important for their sense of autonomy and self-esteem. Even to keep their job. It may be possible to adjust these beliefs by means of a group course, according to PhD research of Daphne Jansen that was conducted at NIVEL.

Palliatieve zorg én streven naar genezing

At the end of their life, cure is less often an important treatment aim for patients with cancer than for patients with another disease. For only a small number of patients palliation as well as cure is a treatment aim, as a publication by researchers at NIVEL and VUmc shows in the British Journal of General Practice.

Doctors’ gut feelings

It occurs that a general practitioner (GP) has a feeling that something is not OK with the patient and relates the feeling to a suspected cancer diagnosis without knowing why. This gut feeling appears to be not an imprecise but nonetheless valuable instrument. In two third of the cases this gut feeling leads to a diagnosis and in one third the ultimate diagnosis is cancer.
