Measurement of patient experiences leads to better care

Nursing homes, homes for the elderly and home care organizations that previously received a relatively poor assessment of patients, have improved their care. Their performance could have been even better if clients had been actively involved in implementing improvements. This is what Marloes Zuidgeest concludes in her PhD-thesis. The study was a joint effort of Tranzo, NIVEL and the Dutch Centre for Consumer Experience in Health Care.

Global ratings on quality of care of limited value

The patient perspective on quality of care is often summarized in a global rating. However, whether a global rating is an appropriate summary measure remains questionable. Research by the NIVEL and the Centre for Consumer Experience in Health Care shows that several quality aspects are not reflected by a global rating. The study is now published by the journal Health Expectations.

Poor presentation approaches on websites with comparative health care information

The presentation of online comparative health care information can be improved. To facilitate consumers’ use of this kind of information, the information should be limited to only those indicators that consumers actually include in their decisions. In addition, the meaning of the information should be straightforward and the information should be displayed by using unambiguous presentation formats. This was shown in a NIVEL study, on which Olga Damman defended her thesis at Tilburg University.

Publication of comparative quality information leads to better performances of health plans

The introduction of managed competition in the Dutch healthcare system along with public reporting of quality information is associated with performance improvement in health plans, according to a study published in the open access journal BMC Health Services Research.
