Nationwide albuminuria self-test program increases awareness on renal diseases

A nationwide albuminuria self-test program of the Dutch Kidney Foundation resulted in an increasing number of newly diagnosed renal complaints and diseases by the general practitioner (GP) the year after the program. Apparently, the self-test program increased the awareness on renal diseases of both GPs and patients according to a recently published NIVEL study in BMC Family Practice.

Hospital standardised mortality ratio needs improvement

Prior to implementing the hospital standardised mortality ratio (HSMR) for hospital comparisons and improvement of quality of care, some adaptations need to be made. HSMR is a promising instrument, however, the current measurement is too distorted by factors other than quality of care. This conclusion was drawn by Wim van den Bosch in his thesis defended on November 2 2011 at the VUmc in Amsterdam, based on a study at Santeon and supervised at NIVEL.

Medication use is not a matter of trust

These findings were published by NIVEL researchers in the International Journal of Person Centered Medicine.

Rs virus peaks in winter

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection leads to hospitalization of 2,500 infants a year in the Netherlands. The virus causes influenza-like symptoms. A NIVEL study, on which Tamara Meerhoff defended her thesis at VU University Amsterdam, found that RSV peaks around Christmas when the weather is cold and wet.

NIVEL research judged to be very good to excellent

An external committee consisting of leading national scientists as well as prominent scientists from abroad assessed NIVEL research in October 2010. The committee praised the productivity and social relevance and judged NIVEL to be excellent on these criteria. Quality and viability were assessed as being very good.

Poor presentation approaches on websites with comparative health care information

The presentation of online comparative health care information can be improved. To facilitate consumers’ use of this kind of information, the information should be limited to only those indicators that consumers actually include in their decisions. In addition, the meaning of the information should be straightforward and the information should be displayed by using unambiguous presentation formats. This was shown in a NIVEL study, on which Olga Damman defended her thesis at Tilburg University.
