Nivel is an independent research institute which positions itself on the crossroads between the scientific community, policymakers and the health care field (providers, insurance companies and patient organisations). Our motto is: Bringing worlds together.

Nivel is organised in 12 research teams with experts in their specific field. Through interacting and collaborating the different teams can answer more complex societal questions and challenges.

Nivel's permanent staff consists of senior experts, all with a PhD degree, in various fields. At the end of 2015, Nivel had approximately 160 employees, of whom 100 were scientific staff, 40 performed functions related to research and 20 performed administrative functions.

The formal structure of Nivel is a not-for-profit foundation. Our funding is based on several funding streams:

  • a long-term grant from the Ministry of Health for specific databases, panels and for monitoring research infrastructure;
  • external project grants from a wide variety of national and international funding organisations.

Starting in 1965 as the scientific institute of the Dutch College of General Practitioners, Nivel's domain has expanded gradually to primary care, secondary care and hospital care. Nowadays, Nivel's research covers the entire 'somatic' health care.
