An international collaboration aimed at tackling infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance
Societies within and outside Europe are exposed to the threat of infectious disease outbreaks and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). History has shown many such cases. A very recent example of this is the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to affect nearly every aspect of social life worldwide. To respond adequately to risks and consequences, a multidisciplinary approach is required, making use of current scientific insights. In practice, this approach is not sufficiently taken up, and this is largely due to the fact that insufficient use is made of the knowledge and skills of the social sciences.
Within the consortium, Nivel is committed to developing practical solutions for locally identified problems in response to current threats, together with the partners, based on research. This three-year project will ensure the continuation and reinforcement of Nivel's international activities on a theme that will remain a point of attention for public health and safety in the future.
The positioning and utilization of the social sciences in the fight against infectious diseases and AMR is central to the Sonar-Global project. This approach is being tested in Bangladesh, Uganda and Ukraine, but also within Europe with a focus on COVID-19. The European countries include Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
Strategies, tools and training programs are to address vulnerabilities in various regions, together with local stakeholders.
As an international consortium, coordinated by the Pasteur Institute, Sonar-Global works together with scientists, policy makers and professionals from many countries.
