LISTENING TIME: The development, evaluation and implementation of a communication-enhancing online training for elderly patients with cancer and their caregivers

Patient-centred communication is taking an increasingly important role in cancer care. Consultations where the patient perspective is included, ask both more communication skills of the caregiver as a more active and participatory role of the patient. Both benefit from a training where patients learn to adopt a more active role and oncology care providers accept and facilitate this role.

The aim is to develop, evaluate and implement LISTENING TIME; a communication-enhancing online training for elderly patients with cancer and their caregivers

10-12 elderly patients are approached to participate in a focus group/ interview to find out about their expectations, needs and barriers on communication with their oncology caregivers. 5-10 oncological caregivers are interviewed with the aim to realize the feasibility of further patient participation in practice. Based on the results a beta version of LISTENING TIME is developed and tested by 5-10 elderly patients and technology (ICT) professionals on usability, attractiveness and credibility. Lastly, an evaluation of LISTENING TIME in the participating hospitals takes place, by using a questionnaires among 60 elderly patients. After evaluation, LISTEING TIME is publicly available.

The result of the project is an online, user-friendly and publicly accessible communication training (LISTENING TIME) for elderly patients with cancer and their oncology caregivers. LISTENING TIME is used for preparing, implementing and listening back to a (continued) conversation with an oncology caregiver through the use of video examples (modelling) of good communication.
