Medication for asthma and COPD

Duration: January 2016 - June 2016

GPs have various medicines available to prescribe for treatment of asthma and COPD including inhaled corticosteroids and medicines for systemic use. It is not known to what extent GPs prescribe these medicines according to prevailing guidelines. For an optimal effect, besides the right medicine proper inhalation technique and good compliance is essential.
How often do people with (suspected) asthma and / or COPD in general practice use medicines for asthma and COPD?
Data are used from NIVEL Primary Care Database. This data source allows to check at the patient level whether the general practitioner follows the guidelines when prescribing medication. Also a record review study and interviews will be done in 15 general practices. We also use data from previous NIVEL studies.
This study demonstrates the way in which doctors treat patients with asthma or COPD. It also gives insight into issues of medication adherence and preference policy.
