Prevention of sports injuries benefits from an accurate registration of incidence and medical treatment. Until recently, specific information on sports injuries treated by the general practitioner were scarcely available. The Dutch Continuous Morbidity Registration Sentinel Stations NIVEL registered sports injuries in 45 GP practices between 2005 and 2007. The network is nationally representative by age, gender, regional distribution and population density. Additional data on type and cause of sports injury were collected by questionnaire. Data on sports injuries treated by GPs were compared with already available data. GPs mainly treat injuries due to football, running and physical education, and injuries of the knee and ankle. In half of the cases the GP only advises the athlete. The GP plays an important role in the treatment of sports injuries and subsequent exercise and preventive advice. The registration in GP practices is a useful addition to existing data on sport injuries, and can be used for education and policy purposes with regard to treatment and reference
of sport injuries by GPs. (aut. ref.)
