The National Public Mental Health Commission concluded in its report "Zorg van velen"(People's Care) that the epidemiological data on trends in public mental health in the Netherlands from 1980 to 2000 are contradictory. The authors demonstrate that by confining ourselves to anxiety and mood ailments and disorders in the adult population and adding new epidemiological data, it is now possible to construct a trend. They conclude that the number of people with anxiety and mood ailments has remained the same; the evidence is not as strong though that the level has remained the same as regards DSM disorders. To explain the growing demand for care, the psychologisation hypothesis is presented.(aut. ref.)
