With the fall of communism in Eastern Europe a period started of ongoing transformations of the political, economic and social situation. This monograph describes the transformation in the field of health care in five countries: the former German Democratic Republic, The Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary and Poland. The book starts with a general description and appraisal of the (ongoing) transformations upto now. Remarkably, all countries involved tend towards the introduction of a 'Bismarckian' social health insurance system. In the second part of the book, for each of the five countries the health care system as it was under communism is described as well as the changes since the fall of communism.
