There was a prolonged influenza epidemic in the 2014/2015 season in the Netherlands. As frequently, type A was dominant, A(H3N2) being the most prevalent subtype. Compared with the 2013/2014 season, no antigenic drift was observed in subtypes A(H1N1)pdm09 and (in contrast to findings of the WHO) the phylogenetic lineage B/Yamagata/16/88. With subtype A(H3N2), we noted moderate antigenic drift. The influenza vaccine used for the 2014/2015 season matched antigenically well with the A(H1N1)pdm09 virus isolates from the Netherlands but poorly with the A(H3N2) and suboptimally with the B/Yamagata/16/88 lineage virus isolates.
