De Europese Commissie publiceerde op 6 juni het ‘Major and Chronic Diseases Report 2007’. Het rapport beschrijft de beschikbaarheid en kwaliteit van gezondheidsinformatie in Europa voor dertien veel voorkomende chronische aandoeningen. Er zijn grote verschillen tussen de Europese landen.
Zo overlijden in een aantal Europese landen meer mensen vroegtijdig aan hart- en vaatziekten, terwijl dat voor een deel van hen voorkomen had kunnen worden. En oudere mensen met diabetes lijken niet in alle Europese landen adequate zorg te krijgen. Verder beschrijft het rapport de aanwezige gegevens in de Europese landen over autisme, kanker in het algemeen en hematologische kankers in het bijzonder, dementie, depressie, problemen rondom zwangerschap en geboorte, multiple sclerose, aandoeningen van het bewegingsapparaat, mondgezondheid, seksualiteit/problemen met de voortplanting en levensverwachting met chronische ziekte.
Het rapport geeft niet alleen een overzicht van aanwezige data, maar ook van de gebieden waarvoor op dit moment onvoldoende gegevens beschikbaar zijn. Hierdoor is het een belangrijk instrument voor nationale en internationale beleidsmakers. Daarnaast biedt het inzicht in beschikbare data over chronische ziekten in Europa, en in de vergelijkbaarheid en kwaliteit van die data. Het rapport is daardoor te gebruiken als naslagwerk voor volksgezondheidsexperts en -onderzoekers.
Het rapport is geschreven door experts in de volksgezondheid van de Task Force on Major and Chronic Diseases van de Health Information Strand van het Programme for Community Action in the field of Public Health 2003-2008. Het NIVEL (Nederlands instituut voor onderzoek van de gezondheidszorg) heeft via het Scientific Assistance Office (SAO) project, dat gefinancierd wordt door DG SANCO (Europese Commissie), bijgedragen aan de totstandkoming van het rapport. SAO speelde hierin een coördinerende en ondersteunende rol en schreef er aan mee.

Blind spots in European health information
On June 6th 2008 the European Commission has published the Major and Chronic Diseases Report 2007. This report describes the state of the art of health information in Europe on 13 prevalent chronic conditions. Large differences between the Member States of the European Union became apparent.
For example, as compared to the old Member States, in the new Member States there is considerable premature death of Cardiovascular causes, which to a large extent is preventable. And Diabetes care for elderly patients seems to be inadequate in several Member States. Besides these topics, the report gives an overview of available health information for Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Cancer in general and more specifically Haematological Malignancies, Dementia, Depression, Maternal and Child Health, Multiple Sclerosis, Musculoskeletal Conditions, Oral Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Life Expectancy with Chronic Morbidity.
Besides giving an overview of available data, the report aims to identify urgent gaps in information. This makes the report an important tool for both national and supranational policy makers. Next to that, the report will be a comprehensive guide for public health experts and researchers, showing them the availability, quality and comparability of data on major and chronic diseases in Europe.
