This winter, the consultation rates for influenza like illness (ILI) and/or acute respiratory infection (ARI) started to increase firstly in Scotland, Greece and Spain in December 2006 [1], where they have already returned to levels just above or at the baseline. For most countries in the South-West of Europe consultation rates started to increase around mid-January 2007 [1], where they have passed their peak by now. In week 08/2007 clinical influenza activity further increased in the North-East of Europe (the Scandinavian countries, the Baltic States and Poland) and in the adjacent countries Germany and the Netherlands. Additionally, clinical influenza activity increased in Slovenia [2]. All 30 countries participating in EISS have now reported increased levels of influenza activity this winter.
