In order to gain more clear understanding of the epidemiology of a selection of respiratory infectious diseases in The Netherlands in the season 2004/2005, epidemiological data about a selection of respiratory syndromes and pathogens (influenza-like illnesses, other acute respiratory infections, legionellosis, psittacosis, Q-fever, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and parainfluenza) coming from various surveillance systems has been analyzed. Data from the period 1 April 2004 - 31 March 2005 has been compared with data from the previous season(s). The epidemiological trends of infectious diseases in the season 2004/2005 appeared to be aligned with previous the season(s). In 2004/2005 there was no increase in the number of reports of psittacosis compared to previous seasons. However, in winter 2004/2005 there were two clusters of psittacosis occurred in a short period of time. Consequently there should be a more intensive surveillance of psittacosis. Furthermore, some adaptations of surveillance systems would be desired, so that a more valid interpretation of trends could occur. Amongst others, adaptations could be to increase the number of patients from whom throat- and nose swaps will be taken in the NIVEL-surveillance, to improve the search for the source of infection for respiratory infectious diseases that are compulsory to report, to expand the virological weekrecords with data about diagnostics that has been applied, demographical data and information about de denominator.
