Based on initial test results, the Turkish health authorities had earlier ruled out the possibility of avian influenza infections in these patients, but further tests on lung specimens showed positive results. Patient samples have now been sent to the World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating centre in the United Kingdom for further analysis, and results are expected within days. A team of experts from WHO, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Commission is currently in Turkey, on the invitation of the Turkish ministry of health, to help with the investigation.
