Background: The European Commission has established a set of health indicators for monitoring the health problems of member states. Many conditions are managed entirely in primary care and conversely, very few entirely escape the attention of general practitioners. Advances in the use of electronic medical records give new opportunities for obtaining epidemiological data at low cost. Objective: This presentation is made to explore the feasibility of developing an integrated chain of information networks across Europe in which continuous programmes of harmonization of methods and recording standards are monitored routinely. European network of primary care information systems: An overview of existing networks in Europe will be presented, describing key characteristics. A structured discussion on the desirability and feasibility of a pan-European network of EMR based primary care information systems will follow. (aut. ref.)
