Quality of Life in Oncology: measuring what matters for cancer patients and survivors in Europe (EUonQoL)

Duration: Jan 2023 - Dec 2026

Background
In 2020 there were 2.7 million new cases of cancer in Europe, and 1.3 million deaths. This is expected to increase with about 25% by 2035. Across Europe, there is a variability in epidemiology, health care expenditures and outcomes with regard to a cancer diagnosis. European initiatives against cancer (Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and Cancer Mission) have the objectives to reduce mortality, increase survival and ameliorate quality of life (QoL).

Aim
EUonQoL aims to develop, pilot and validate the EUonQoL-Kit, a patient-driven, unified system for the assessment of QoL based on evaluations and preferences of cancer patients and survivors.

Method
The EUonQoL-Kit will be developed from a patient perspective, administered digitally, available in the EU27 and associated countries languages, and applicable in future, periodic surveys to contribute to the EU’s mission on cancer.
At the core of the EUonQoL there is the adoption of a multistakeholder, co-design methodology, engaging patient representatives, healthcare professionals, administrators, policymakers, and citizens in all project related activities.
An analysis of cross-cultural determinants potentially impacting on cancer patients’ and survivors’ QoL, will also be performed.

Recruitment of participants is done, among others, by posting these calls for action on social media.

Expected result:
EUonQoL-Kit to identify and assess patients’ needs and impact of health policies or interventions.
