Research program Patient Centered Care

Program coordination by Nivel expert Dolf de Boer PhD

It is essential to know how patients perceive the healthcare system and what they think of the quality of that care. We use that knowledge to help improve care and persuade healthcare providers to be as patient-centred as possible. The health service should be about helping to improve patients’ health and quality of life. That makes the patient the most important figure in the health service. The patient’s opinion is crucial for a proper assessment of the quality and effectiveness of healthcare. To have a health service that functions well and to make improvements, we need to know what patients think of that healthcare and what choices they make. How can we get patients involved in their own care? How can we best record, interpret and use patients’ experiences?
