Patient-centered communication in the pharmacy through mentalization

Duration: Jul 2021 - Jun 2022

Rationale
We are often inclined to fill in emotions and thoughts of other people. Mentalization is about how well we are able to recognize which thoughts and emotions impact behavior, both in yourself and in others. By applying mentalization in patient encounters, pharmacists can better understand patient's thoughts and needs and thus build a better relationship.

Aim
The aim of this project is to develop a mentalization-oriented communication training for the pharmacy team and to test it on a small scale.

Project design
The training was designed by the University of Copenhagen and Pharmakon. The University of Groningen and Nivel are adapting the training for the Dutch situation. The training is then tested and evaluated among 30 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The training is adjusted accordingly. A business model for further implementation is being developed.

Results
The main result of this project will be an innovative training for the pharmacy team.
