The report presents facts and figures about several indicators of the burden of chronic kidney disease in the Netherlands.
With the expected rise in risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, overweight and the aging populaon, more and more people will experience negave consequences of chronic kidney disease in the coming years. Unfortunately, awareness about chronic kidney disease remains low, including in the Netherlands.
The Dutch Kidney Foundaon iniated an effort to systemically report the burden of chronic kidney
disease in the Netherlands to assess its consequences and to improve awareness about the disease.
This first report presents figures on the prevalence and incidence of chronic kidney disease in people
18 years and older registered in primary care in the Netherlands. The report also presents the
prevalence of common comorbidies, their treatment, and the rate of death in those who are known
to have chronic kidney disease. This report will be updated regularly, and more data will be added in
the coming edions.
