In 2024, more than half of those invited for influenza vaccination were vaccinated by their GP

In 2024, 54% of people who were invited by their GP, received the flu shot. For pneumococcal vaccination, this was 45%. These results come from the annual Vaccination Coverage Monitors influenza vaccination and pneumococcal vaccination in the Netherlands, carried out by Nivel on behalf of the RIVM.

Influenza vaccination coverage 54% in 2024

Every autumn, people aged 60 and older, as well as those with certain medical conditions, are invited for influenza vaccination. In 2024, 54% made use of this invitation. Since the start of the National Influenza Prevention Programme (NPG), the target group has changed several times, but since 2008, all people aged 60 and older have received an invitation. At that time, 77% of people aged 60 and older were vaccinated. Coverage later declined to 54% in 2017, rose again to 67% in 2021, and fell back to 59% in 2024.

Pneumococcal vaccination coverage 45% in 2024

In 2024, people born between 1961 and 1964 (aged 60–63 years) were invited for pneumococcal vaccination. Of these, 45% were vaccinated. This is lower than in 2020–2023, but figures are not comparable as different age groups are invited each year.

About the study

The annual Vaccination Coverage Monitors for the influenza and pneumococcal vaccination are carried out by Nivel on behalf of the RIVM. They are based on pseudonymised data from electronic patient records of general practices participating in Nivel Primary Care Database. The RIVM coordinates the national programs for influenza vaccination (since 1997) and pneumococcal vaccination (since 2020) on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports (VWS). The monitors provide insight into how vaccination coverage within these programmes develops over time.
