Two-thirds of people invited for vaccination receive the new pneumococcal vaccine, half get the flu vaccine
Gegevensverzameling
In 2025, 66% of people who were invited by their GP, received the new pneumococcal vaccination. For flu vaccination, this was 54%. These figures are based on the annual Vaccination Coverage Monitors influenza vaccination and pneumococcal vaccination in the Netherlands, carried out by the Nivel on behalf of the RIVM.
Since 2025, a new pneumococcal vaccine (PCV20) has been used. This vaccine no longer needs to be repeated every five years. Only one dose is needed. People are invited for vaccination when they turn 60; in 2025, this included people born in 1965. In addition to those aged 60, people born between 1941 and 1947 were invited for a revaccination in 2025. They had received their previous invitation five years earlier. A catch-up group of people born before 1941 was also invited for the first time to receive a pneumococcal vaccination.
In 2025, 66% of those invited for pneumococcal vaccination were vaccinated. Vaccination coverage was lowest (43%) in those born in 1965 (60 years of age) and highest (74%) in those born in 1946 (79 years of age). The new vaccine has not affected the vaccine coverage. Both in 2024 and 2025, 54% of 60-year olds were vaccinated. In the revaccination group that was invited in 2020 and 2025 vaccine coverage was similar in both years: 72%-75% in 2020 and 72%-74% in 2025.

Every autumn, people aged 60 and over, as well as those with certain medical conditions, are invited to receive an influenza vaccination. In 2025, 54% of those invited were vaccinated, the same as in 2024. Among those aged under 60 who received an invitation due to a medical condition, 27% were vaccinated. Among those aged 60 and over 58% were vaccinated.
For the results of this Nivel study, see the publications on the brief monitors on the Vaccine Coverage Dutch National Influenza Prevention Program 2025 and the Vaccine Coverage Dutch National Pneumococcal vaccination Program Adults 2025.
The annual Vaccination Coverage Monitors for the influenza and pneumococcal vaccination are carried out by Nivel on behalf of the RIVM. They are based on pseudonymized data from electronic patient records of general practices participating in the Nivel Primary Care Database. The RIVM coordinates the national programs for influenza vaccination (since 1997) and pneumococcal vaccination (since 2020) on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports (VWS). The monitors provide insight into how vaccination coverage within these programmes develops over time.
