Introduction
It is important that equal access to healthcare is guaranteed, especially for vulnerable groups such as chronically ill people with limited health literacy. However, healthcare has been less accessible for them for years. Possibly, they also experienced the most adverse consequences of postponed and cancelled care during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we examined how experiences with (consequences of) delayed care were related to health literacy of patients.

Methods
A representative sample of chronically ill people (15+ years) completed questionnaires about the (consequences of) delayed care during the COVID-19 pandemic (N = 1.286). Differences between people with sufficient and limited health literacy were analyzed.

Results
Chronically ill individuals with limited health literacy more often reported that they had experienced fully cancelled care appointments than those with sufficient health literacy. They also suffered more from the consequences of cancelled or delayed care appointments, such as increased health problems.

Conclusion
A crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic can widen the gap in access to care between chronically ill individuals with limited health literacy and chronically ill individuals with sufficient health literacy. Chronically ill individuals with limited health literacy need support from healthcare providers and accessible (digital) innovations to manage their illness effectively.
