ViRgil: resistance against antiviral drugs, NIVEL's contribution, 2004-2007

Duration: May 2004 - Dec 2007

Background
The increasing resistance of viruses to antiviral drugs is of concern, especially in light of an impending pandemic of influenza. This project is part of the ViRgil Network of Excellence in which experts from European countries cooperate in researching various aspects of resistance of (hepatitis and influenza) viruses to antiviral drugs. NIVEL contributes to this by studying the extent and impact of influenza virus resistance to antivirals.

Research question
To what extent does antiviral resistance occur in circulating influenza virus types and what is the potential impact of this resistance on the course of an influenza pandemic?

Method
Based on literature data and empirical virological data, the extent and potential impact of influenza virus resistance to antiviral drugs is estimated.

Results
Insight into the potential impact of influenza virus resistance to antiviral drugs in terms of morbidity, healthcare utilization and mortality.
