Background: Health care for cancer patients, particularly follow-up and aftercare, is more and more considered a task of general practitioners (GPs). It is therefore important to know how cancer patients in general, and in different phases of the illness, experience the quality of GP-care. Methods: We asked (by means of a survey) a heterogeneous group of 353 cancer patients of the Dutch ‘Panel Living with Cancer’ (post diagnosis time-span: 1-15 years) how they had experienced specific aspects of GP-care. Regression analyses were conducted to assess how the total group as well as subgroups experienced the quality of GPcare. Results: Overall, cancer patients who had visited their GP in the previous year (N=242) perceived the quality of GP-care the same as Dutch GPpatients in general. Compared to recently diagnosed patients, people who were diagnosed longer ago felt less kindly treated by the GP and were less positive about the interpersonal communication (both p <.05). Patients who were still receiving cancer treatment experienced more personalized care (p <.05) and were more positive about the received GP-care in general (p <.01) than cancer patients who were not receiving cancer treatment anymore. No differences were found regarding the perceived quality of the collaboration between the GP and medical specialist(s). Conclusion: Cancer patients generally have positive experiences regarding the quality of GPcare. However, our results indicate that patients in the aftercare and chronic phase are less positive about some aspects of GP-care, which is in line with earlier published reports, a.o. from the Netherlands Health Inspectorate.
