Research

Marcia’s research line within the Pharmaceutical Care program is good use of medicines (from the perspective of the patient) and communication. On the one hand, she focuses her research directly on the patient, for example by gaining insight into their experiences with medicines and which problems they experience in their use and by examining which interventions can promote adherence. On the other hand, she focuses her research on improving communication between patient and healthcare provider, in particular the pharmacy team, by providing them with tools to (better) support the patient in their medication use. Examples of the tools developed within her research line are online feedback communication training for the pharmacy team (COM-MA). A practical set of questions with which the pharmacy team can identify possible problems in use at the pharmacy counter and discuss them with the patient (TRIAGE). And in collaboration with UPPER/Univeristy Utrecht, the RALPH interview guide fort he pharmacy team to recognize patients with limited pharmaceutical literacy. Since several years, she is also involved in promoting the implementation of medication adherence interventions in (pharmacy) practice.
