At Nivel, I coordinate international research activities, among others through projects funded by Horizon Europe or the EU4Health Programme. I also conduct research at national and international level, with a special interest in the comparison of health care systems, the transfer of service and policy innovations across sectors and countries, and the use of evidence in decision-making.

I have led various research consortia and framework contracts with the European Commission. A main exampe is the EUHealthSupport consortium, which held a Single FWC to support expert groups in public health (Chafea/2018/03). I was responsible for the execution of 16 Requests for Service for DG SANTE, DG RTD and HERA on a range of policy areas, among others providing scientific support to the EU Mission on Cancer, Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, the Expert Group on Public Health and the National Competent Authorities on Pricing and Reimbursement and Public Healthcare Payers (NCAPR). We also conducted studies on a range of topics, including the implementation of the GDPR in all EU Member States, the implementation of a new Regulation on health security for cross-border health threats the preparation of the EU Commission Communication ‘A comprehensive approach to mental Health’. 

Over the last two decades I have also been involved in setting up EU level networks to help improve the contribution of European Health Services Research (HSR) to policy and practice. I've been coordinator of HSR Europe, an informal network of HSR researchers, among others providing training activities for researchers and publishing policy briefs, with the aim to build capacity and improve the societal impact of this field of research. Until November 2025 I'm also President of the Section Health Services Research at the European Public Health Association (EUPHA).
