Onderzoek
Mijn werkterrein ligt voornamelijk in het buitenland. Ik onderzoek en vergelijk zorgsystemen in andere landen. Daardoor kunnen we beleidsmakers laten zien hoe de gezondheidszorg in hun land het doet vergeleken met andere landen. De kennis uit internationale studies is toepasbaar in landen die hun zorgsysteem anders willen inrichten om beter in te spelen op de zorgbehoefte van de bevolking. Opdrachtgevers waar ik voor werk zijn de Europese Commissie, de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) en buitenlandse overheden en stakeholderorganisaties.

Zorgonderzoek is zowel wetenschap als toepassing. Die combinatie vind ik interessant: onze onderzoeksvragen vinden hun oorsprong in de praktijk en de resultaten moeten daar ook weer bruikbaar zijn. Daarnaast is internationaal werken boeiend, omdat je steeds te maken hebt met een andere context, terwijl je vaak ziet dat de problemen waar men mee kampt, veel lijken op die in de gezondheidszorg in andere landen. De vraag naar onze internationale expertise nam sterk toe na de val van de Berlijnse Muur in 1990, toen landen in midden- en oost Europa hun slecht functionerende zorgstelsels grondig moesten verbouwen. Vooral als Collaborating Centre van de WHO werden we toen in die landen actief. Ook bij EU lidstaten, in andere landen in Europa en daarbuiten is sinds de eeuwwisseling de belangstelling voor internationale vergelijking van zorgsystemen toegenomen. Dat heeft onder meer geleid tot de omvangrijke studies PHAMEU en QUALICOPC waar meer dan 30 landen bij betrokken waren.
